Potions and Scrolls

Death's Trance

There is a great deal of debate as to whether this particular concoction was dreamt up as a way to protect nobility from the various power struggles that inevitably accompany a crown or if it was a fabulously successful con in Greyhawk preformed by freelance thieves that saw Death's Trance spreading out across the lands. What is known is that for good or ill, this particular potion has reached all strata of society in the Flanaess.

When this potion is imbibed it renders the victim in a state resembling death. Only True Seeing will reveal the life still held within the comatose individual, all other spells will will show only that it is a corpse. The drinker in turn has no awareness of their surroundings, indeed as far as they can tell they are also effectively expired. This effect lasts for exactly one hour. When the time expires the drinker of the potion will abruptly awaken. If given to someone who doesn't know about it they are allowed a Fortitude saving throw, DC 17 to avoid being rendered unconscious.

Doppleganger's Elixir

This odd potion was first commissioned by a troupe of assassins so that they could get closer to their targets without arousing too much suspicion. It worked too well because the head of the guild that first paid for the potions died on the blade of a person that looked strangely like his own daughter. It is not known if any wizards or alchemists still know the secret formulae to make this potent drink, but from time to time a few find their way into the hands of rogues and adventurers to cause a little more mischief in the world.

When a person drinks this potion, they will physically transform into the next person they touch. They will look identical in every way and will even sound just like the person who they mimicked. As an added attraction to this substance the person will not register as being under the influence of magic. The final bonus granted is alignment, if the person is checked, they will register as the same alignment as their victim assuring a complete disguise. There is one limitation, and that's duration. The elixir lasts for exactly one hour. At the end of that time the person immediately reverts back to their normal form.

Jackal Scroll

These rare scrolls were first conceived of by a rather lazy wizard named Plerion the Jackal; who was prone to quick and dirty adventuring over proper magical research. It is often thought that he actually founded a small society of mystic thieves known as the Jackals. But that sounded like too much real work for Plerion to have really done it. What is known was that he apparently was a more capable magician than he let on and this scroll is the proof. Others have managed to mimic its secret and made it themselves, but there are still very few in existence.

When the bearer of this scroll is the target of a spell he can hold it up to "block the path" and state the command word. The scroll instantly absorbs the spell that was cast at the bearer transforming it into a spell ready to be cast from the scroll as if it were a spell scroll. Once the scroll has absorbed its maximum number of spells allowed it becomes useless until the ones it caught are used. It is thought that the original one made by Plerion could hold up to five spells at a time, ones made by other wizards hold only one, or maybe two at most.
